Ruthless game, hands of fate, achilles heel… state of grace

I can’t believe I haven’t posted in nearly a year. Since moving to Boston, a lot has definitely changed in my life. However, I’ve still continued the all black trends along with my friends here. Sun’s out, fun’s out though and I think it may be time to transition toward color – so into bright pops of pink, yellow, and blue to lighten the mood… and of course the silver metallic shoes!

Mara Hoffman: Printed Scoop High-Cut Maillot, Black Multicolor

$225.00

I always get the most compliments when I’m wearing my Mara Hoffman prints. She has designed some of the most unique prints, which remind me of the the therapeutic adult coloring books, except she’s colored everything in the exact colors I would have. Need to team up with her. Way to take over, when there was something missing in Tolani prints. Anyway, I totally love this one-piece swimsuit. The print reminds me of some of the things my mom would wear when I was in grade school (K-3 maybe).

Rene Caovilla: Crystal Snakeskin d’Orsay 105mm Pump, Silver/Rose Gold

$1,190.00

I honestly used to be obsessed with Rene Caovilla (I still am) when I was shopping for wedding shoes but honestly so glad I didn’t bite the bullet on those gold ones as the styles just keep getting better and better. This one also is more fitting for the crystal, silver-toned gems along the bodice. #thisislove #fml

Glad I start work in the fall…

So glad I start work in September because I love fall fashion. Perfect timing too for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Having worked at Nordstrom, I always took advantage of this time of year to build my fashion forward outfit for the start of each school year. The sale is over August 8th so you still have a little more than a week to gather these finds before prices go up:

Topshop Stripe Split Hem Tunic : When I first saw this at Nordstrom, I thought it was a dress. Upon trying it on and finding out it was a tunic with side slits, it became more interesting. The quality is really good too and I’m hoping it doesn’t pill with more use.

Screen Shot 2016-07-31 at 4.07.02 PM.png

Vince Camuto Print Lace Sleeveless Shift Dress: Love the fall colors on this dress. It definitely looks better in person with the laser-cut detail.

Screen Shot 2016-07-31 at 4.12.45 PM.png

Ro & De Floral Print Poet Blouse: Definitely check the back collar of this shirt. Has a very high permanent popped collar. I also love the color and print.

Screen Shot 2016-07-31 at 4.33.16 PM.png

Alice + Olivia ‘Clyde’ Print Sleeveless A-line Dress : Geometric, color block, and abstract in 1.

Screen Shot 2016-07-31 at 4.41.38 PM.png

Freida Rothman Etoile Pave Disc Drop Earrings: I love this brand and the earrings look even sweeter in person. I recently checked out the jewelry sections of Armenia, John Hardy, Ippolita, and even the cute new David Yurman styles, and these are honestly comparable at a more reasonable price range.

Ted Baker London ‘Union Jack’ Printed Leather Wallet  Not only do I love these Ted Baker wallets (especially in the bright pink) but even more so because of the UK flag. I don’t think many people will buy this, which means I can pick one up in a few months. Do you notice the flowers in the red part and butterflies in the white and blue portions.

Topshop ‘Meg’ Zip Pocket Coat Car coat in my fave color is all I can say. My brother would love this!

Unemployed Summer

Now that the training and exam are over, I’m just cruising until I finally start my first real job in September. I’m supposed to be taking care of all this stuff: publications, wedding planning, graduation party planning but honestly when you don’t have much to do, things get done verrrryyyy slowly. I try to occupy myself with any other task but those, cleaning my bro’s room, doing everyone’s laundry, and of course blogging.

Since it’s a scorching 90+ with a heat index of >100, you must remember to stay hydrated on summer water aka rose. What better place to sip on this goodness than on a rooftop overlooking one of the best city skylines in the world. Of course, the girls that go here for brunch come to be seen – designer handbags galore, sunglasses to match the RBF, and the latest summer trends all can be seen in a 10-second snap. Now let’s break down that outfit…

Shades to match the shades thrown along with the RBF:

Illesteva Milan III Round Sunglasses, White Tortoise

I realize I have too many of the classic tortoise frames which have been a favorite of mine since I owned the mini butterfly hair clips. It’s refreshing to see that they now have white tortoise option which is cool for the summer (queue Demi Lovato). If tortoise ain’t your thing, they have other options and mirror lens in several shades, which honestly is what every fashion blogger uses to reflect the palm trees, beach, selfie stick in their photos. Justin Bieber, Jessica Alba, and Gigi Hadid wear Illesteva so it must be good…

Prada Cat-Eye Double Bridged Sunglasses

I just got myself a pair of these babies inspired by my mom who recently bought the Miu Miu version. I was about to purchase the tortoise Miu Miu cat-eye pair but unfortunately the only pair left had some uneven tortoise going on which was really noticeable in the thick lens. My mom stole my idea and got it in solid black. She looked so badass that I needed a similar pair. I LOVE these more actually. They are more sturdy than the wiry Miu Miu’s and I think they fit my face better. I am also glad I finally stepped away from tortoise as this is the perfect match to RBF, try it on and you’ll see!

I know I should be advocating for sun-protective clothing but I am loving the off the shoulder tops and high slit skirts I’m seeing left and right.

Lovers + Friends Sunbathe top

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 10.43.19 AM.png

The appropriately named ‘Sunbathe’ top because who doesn’t love the shoulder tan, complete with the freckles when you hit your 30-40s… I’m guessing we will be seeing the consequences of this trend in 10 years.

Kendall + Kylie Strip Off the Shoulder Crop top

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 12.34.45 PM.png

Why not combine off the shoulder, crop top, B&W, and bell sleeves in one. Kendall + Kylie have cute stuff but with the over-advertising of some of the pieces, you’re a bit hesitant to buy some of the things.

Alice + Olivia Pacey Floral Print Sleeveless Minidress

This dress is just pretty… I need to grow up.

This is adorably cute, though small.

So long…

Man it has definitely been so long since updating this blog (forgot username and pw). The holidays are coming up and there are already a few things on my wish list, which I’ve noticed have a common theme… METALLIC, SHINY and BRIGHT. Here goes.

Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 12.56.51 PM

Lucy Paris ‘Shasta’ Sequin Leggings

Umm yeah these are going fast and we know why. There used to be a prettier copper colored one but obviously since it looked better, it sold out faster… and I got the last XS pair. #sorryimnotsorry

Next up, the Cole Haan metallic jaggers. They have a soft gold metallic and argento metallic (silvery). I can’t upload a picture though because everytime I hover over the photo, it zooms in. Maybe next time. You can only find it on colehaan.com

Now these are not too shiny but they look sleek. I was going to get them until I saw them on Sam Edelman’s instagram and the way the leather bent made it look stiff. Someone give me reviews…

or you can go all out and get these… but tell me, when will the rockstud get old?!?

Lipsticks

I’ve developed this newfound appreciation for lipsticks. I am going to review a few colors I have purchased so far which I would say all look great with my shade of filipino skin.

MAC – because who else makes colors this unique? Covers all the makeup I need for festivals and pride parades!

Picture 4 Picture 2

So I was shopping at Nordstrom browsing the MAC section. I was looking for another typical shade of light pink lipstick (i,e. Snob and Angel) since both of these lipsticks melted in my car! The sales associate was prob wondering why I was searching for such cosmic colors and suggested that a purple would look absolutely gorgeous on my skin. I decided to go back to my avant garde days and listen. I dont know if I was drunk or what but I actually agreed to have her clean the lipsticks up so I can apply the samples directly to my lips (eek, never going to do this again! does the sanitizer kill HSV?). Anyway, I first opted for this lighter lilac purple called “Asian Flower” because I obvi loved the name and was still somewhat cosmic-ish like my previous colors. Ehh it was too bland. Then she handed me “Heroine” and omg, as soon as I put it on, I was SOLD! It actually is prob one of my fave lipsticks. It really stands out and throughout the day, as the color slowly fades, it turns into this pretty fuschia color. It;s actually prettier than one of the true fuschia lipsticks I own. I recommend this to anyone and really think it looks great on all shades of color.

The success with going dark actually led me to get a darker red/ maroon color called “Rebel” (see above). Its nice but I wouldn’t actually recommend. I just use it to layer with my other lipsticks when I want to go darker. Throughout the day, it fades to a weird generic reddish pink cheapo color – ehhh…

Christian Dior

Now since, I like to use the less expensive MAC lipsticks for more trendy lipsticks, I decided to pick up a few classics by Dior, which I believe is one of the longest-wearing, moisturizing lipsticks out there. Big fan! Oh and they taste good too!

Picture 5Picture 99 Picture 38

From L–> R, are Pink Caprice (475), Rose Baiser (361), and 999.

1) Starting with Pink Caprice, my gosh this lipstick is just so fun. Totally feel like happy summer, Paris Hilton, Barbie in this one. I secretly have even been wearing it throughout the winter (shhh, it puts me in a great mood). It has such a nice shimmery sheen to it and it even looks nice when you layer it with other lipsticks (including Heroine above to add moisture). This may be my all-time fave to be honest.

2) Rose Baiser is definitely more a classic that I think is most work appropriate given that no one really wears lipstick at my work. Not much to say about this one except that it’s a great everyday lipstick for the more conservative workplace. Kinda boring but classic and therefore worth it!

Picture 162

3). Lastly, Iconic 999. This is my mom’s absolute fave lipstick. I decided to get it for Christmas only because I was inspired by Taylor Swift (in the black lace lingerie and knife or throughout Red Tour). Don’t ask! Plus everyone needs a red lipstick. It looks awesome. Unfortunately I am not blonde and light-skinned to perfect the T-swift but it still looks so great! I love it and looking forward to wearing it to some later holiday parties still left in January… or if I decide to be T Swift for Halloween.

Chanel

Picture 160

Now I am not too familiar with Chanel lipsticks but they did make this color called L’adoree in their luminous matte lip color line. I couldn’t find any similar brands that made it so there was no other option but to get this one! Sometimes I google swatches on darker skinned people to figure out what would look good on me and this looked awesome on a lot of darker ethnic skinned women. Anyway, I think the color is so awesome, it’s long-wearing. It also has a fancy case with a spring that you can pop up and down. The only issue I have with this is that it’s matte. I tend to have really dry lips. Wrinkly lips too (I think the hyaluronic acid is slowly being eaten away and causing the equivalent of regressed stretch lines on my lips) so I’ve had some trouble with this one. Vaseline helps but then the lipstick doesn’t really adhere to your lips. Chanel does make other non-matte types that I have yet to explore (only if a great color comes out!). Stay tuned.

Santa Tell Me

Hey everyone! Christmas time is here! Honestly, my favorite time of the year! The birth of Sweet Baby Jesus! Happiness everywhere! Christmas music! Buying presents! Festive shiny clothing! What more can I ask for?!?!

I don’t want it to end!!!

I want this!

Picture 104 Slip ons. I looked too young with everything else. Also does anyone have any recs on where I can get personalized moscow mule copper mugs?

Addendum: So I did end up getting these vince shoes and surprisingly had to wear them for about 5 days (>15k steps/ day) straight because I was stranded in italy without my check-in luggage. No flip-flops or any other comfy shoe to change into. They were brand-new at the time too, straight out of the box as I wore them for my flight there. They were pretty comfortable at first until I had to walk up and down uneven cobble stone hills around the Amalfi Coast and eventually developed blisters. I don;t normally wear socks with flats or loafers (my feet don’t smell, I promise) but they were so uncomfortable that I was willing to wear knee-high socks with them. No shame!

Anyway I put them on a few weeks later back home (blister-free) and they really are pretty comfortable. Overall, no regrets. Just had that at the wrong place, wrong time =). My advice is to get a size smaller and just like any rubber sole that gets dirty, windex is the trick. Thank you Cole Haan for the advice ;).

Quite some time…

Sorry, I haven’t updated in quite some time. People who know me well know that I go through phases. I can get really into something and then drop it in a heartbeat. Just to keep the blog alive, I’ve decided to indulge you in some things I am eyeing at the moment:

Picture 142

So fall right now. Sigh.. how our 50 err days of summer have gone by so quickly. New season coming up so get ready. I got the NM catalog yesterday and one of the models had these shoes on. Looked stunning on!

Picture 144

Umm sad and awful truth is that I eat these for breakfast. Maybe I crave animal crackers because we give bags of these to hungry kids in clinic but I prefer the frost and sprinkles.

Rachel Zoe Norah Crocodile Embossed Wedge

I want. These look comfy and I am really into black right now.

Ok thats all I want for now. See, I’m easy to please.

Crop Tops and Maxi Skirts

Image

So I found out that the once baby of our family is now a freshman in high school. She came to my Dad’s birthday party dressed in tights, ripped denim shorts, a crop top, leather jacket, and a beanie hanging off her head. I was like damn, I need to be less square and do this. My cousins and I had a little discussion and decided that we should have a fashion theme for our next family party and just invade the party looking like edgy, hipster, Fifth Harmony-ish, etc… so what did we decide on? Read the title. After some online browsing, this is what I found…

After Visit Summary: Though some of us fear the crop top because of the belly baring, fear not! Get high-rise bottoms to hide the muffin top. Now who says you can’t eat with a midriff on!?!?

What’s in my purse?

Kate Spade Key Ring Wallet – in Japan (similar) // MAC Carbon Eyeshadow // Laura Mercier Flat Eye Liner Brush // Too Faced Bronzer // YSL Touche Eclat // Dior Lip Maximizer // Neutrogena Liquid Sunscreen // Aveeno Eczema Therapy Cream // Field Notes

I like big bags and I cannot lie… maybe because I am a multi-tasker and like to come prepared. Unlike my mom, who always has the biggest bags and fills them up with things she doesn’t need, I tend to keep only what I absolutely necessary for that day. Though I always keep the essentials shown above, I make use of the excess space with my books and papers mostly, iPad, clothing, things for “the morning after” (no the Rebecca Minkoff morning after bags do not suffice for this), etc. So here goes…

Ferragamo Hobo. I had been eyeing this bag when I first saw it blasted on poster ads around the city as well as magazine and catalog back covers. I could not find out what bag it was until wham, a trip to the destination capital of America, ORLANDO. I happened to enter the Ferragamo store and there it was in all it’s glory! The rest is history. Here is the ad that captured me:

Picture 65

Kate Spade Key Ring Wallet (similar). One of my other prized possessions is this key chain coin purse. My sister always had this nifty coin purse attached to her keys where she kept everything from her IDs, major credit cards, train cards, cash. It was so convenient to easily just grab your keys and payment tools in one swoop. I modified mine of course and attached it to a Chicago Booth lanyard, to support my hands-free laziness. It really is great though! Mine is in beige and is getting more and more tattered each day which means I’m making use of things unlike some of my wallets that are still sitting in the box because of their fragile leather… grrr.

MAC Carbon Eyeshadow. I would say my next essential must-carry item is my eyeliner. I feel so naked without eyeliner on. It may sound vain, but I DEPEND on this for my career! Otherwise I look like a tween and don’t get any respect. I previously used the MAC angled brushes but have switched to this flat eyeliner brush by Laura Mercier and love it. I actually just dab the tip of the brush in water to avoid eyeshadow dust from scattering and it tends to work. You may wonder why I don’t use liquid liner or eyeliner pencils and that really is because those are too thin. I look really Asian when I use those.

Too Faced Bronzer. Next essential is bronzer. When someone insultingly tells me, “you look tired”, all I need to do is add the eyeliner, put on the bronzer and voila, I look so much more refreshed. Too Faced is one of those brands that captures your (or maybe just my) attention because they add a touch of leopard, lace, and hearts to their items likely to attract the pre-teens. However, beyond the fluff, there are actually a few gems in this line that are better than some of the more adult funkier makeup lines (i.e. MAC and Nars). I don’t have much experience with anything beyond the Too Faced bronzers but these really are great products. It adds shimmer (think Dior Ultra Shimmering All-over Powder – now d/c’d – =,( ) but in the right places and sticks on your face for the entire day. My Nars super orgasm shimmer and color flakes off after seriously within minutes and bring back the gray unhealthy-appearing face.. ugh.

YSL Touche Eclat. If you feel like you’ve been beaten by an ugly stick, then add YSL Touche Eclat to the mix as a highlighter for dark circles. If you see me wearing the BIG 3, eyeliner, bronzer, and touche eclat, it’ll look like I’ve been on a one-month vacation and just woke up from a 12 hour nap. I depended on this a lot my intern year when I looked like total shit after an ICU night shift and had to make it to our family holiday party, wedding, cotillion, you name it. Though I felt shitty, I made sure not to look shitty thanks to this miracle. I wish I could share pics from those nights to prove it!

Dior Lip Maximizer. Though some people swear by this product, I wouldn’t say it does it’s job of maximizing my lips. Then again, I may be a hopeless cause and there isn’t that much to work with. Bring on the fillers! I initially feel a tingle after applying this product, but my lips just sit there unchanged, getting thinner and thinner as they day goes on. I bet it’s just an allergen exerting it’s effect and since I am not atopic, it’s very anti-climactic for me. It works great as a moisturizer/ gloss though and it’s colorless if you like to avoid that. Sometimes, I put this on either my top or bottom lip, and put my choice lipstick (see Royal Azalea) on the other lip, smear, and voila, best of both worlds. Even though, I’m not sure this is effective, I still will buy this over and over again.

Field NotesThis little idea came out of Oak Park, IL. Go Oak Park. You can buy this in packs of 3 for $9.95 and you can choose from graph, rules, plain, or mixed sheets.  I highly recommend you go their website and check out what they have to offer. As a huge multi-tasker, you can take notes while showering with some of their waterproof options!

Neutrogena Liquid Sunscreen. I first got this product for free at a conference and have loved it since. It is easy to apply, moisturizes your face but goes on matte. It absorbs quickly without that zinc-white residue and you can apply your makeup immediately. Cannot go back.

Aveeno Eczema Therapy Cream. Dermatologist recommended for the compulsive hand washers.

After visit summary: I need a “dot phrase” for things you put in your bag to hand out to everybody. When it comes to bags, “go big or go home”… more frequently. Big bags allow you to stay out of the house for the whole day and errrr night. I am ready for any sleepover if I have all of the above.
