I like big bags and I cannot lie… maybe because I am a multi-tasker and like to come prepared. Unlike my mom, who always has the biggest bags and fills them up with things she doesn’t need, I tend to keep only what I absolutely necessary for that day. Though I always keep the essentials shown above, I make use of the excess space with my books and papers mostly, iPad, clothing, things for “the morning after” (no the Rebecca Minkoff morning after bags do not suffice for this), etc. So here goes…
Ferragamo Hobo. I had been eyeing this bag when I first saw it blasted on poster ads around the city as well as magazine and catalog back covers. I could not find out what bag it was until wham, a trip to the destination capital of America, ORLANDO. I happened to enter the Ferragamo store and there it was in all it’s glory! The rest is history. Here is the ad that captured me:
Kate Spade Key Ring Wallet (similar). One of my other prized possessions is this key chain coin purse. My sister always had this nifty coin purse attached to her keys where she kept everything from her IDs, major credit cards, train cards, cash. It was so convenient to easily just grab your keys and payment tools in one swoop. I modified mine of course and attached it to a Chicago Booth lanyard, to support my hands-free laziness. It really is great though! Mine is in beige and is getting more and more tattered each day which means I’m making use of things unlike some of my wallets that are still sitting in the box because of their fragile leather… grrr.
MAC Carbon Eyeshadow. I would say my next essential must-carry item is my eyeliner. I feel so naked without eyeliner on. It may sound vain, but I DEPEND on this for my career! Otherwise I look like a tween and don’t get any respect. I previously used the MAC angled brushes but have switched to this flat eyeliner brush by Laura Mercier and love it. I actually just dab the tip of the brush in water to avoid eyeshadow dust from scattering and it tends to work. You may wonder why I don’t use liquid liner or eyeliner pencils and that really is because those are too thin. I look really Asian when I use those.
Too Faced Bronzer. Next essential is bronzer. When someone insultingly tells me, “you look tired”, all I need to do is add the eyeliner, put on the bronzer and voila, I look so much more refreshed. Too Faced is one of those brands that captures your (or maybe just my) attention because they add a touch of leopard, lace, and hearts to their items likely to attract the pre-teens. However, beyond the fluff, there are actually a few gems in this line that are better than some of the more adult funkier makeup lines (i.e. MAC and Nars). I don’t have much experience with anything beyond the Too Faced bronzers but these really are great products. It adds shimmer (think Dior Ultra Shimmering All-over Powder – now d/c’d – =,( ) but in the right places and sticks on your face for the entire day. My Nars super orgasm shimmer and color flakes off after seriously within minutes and bring back the gray unhealthy-appearing face.. ugh.
YSL Touche Eclat. If you feel like you’ve been beaten by an ugly stick, then add YSL Touche Eclat to the mix as a highlighter for dark circles. If you see me wearing the BIG 3, eyeliner, bronzer, and touche eclat, it’ll look like I’ve been on a one-month vacation and just woke up from a 12 hour nap. I depended on this a lot my intern year when I looked like total shit after an ICU night shift and had to make it to our family holiday party, wedding, cotillion, you name it. Though I felt shitty, I made sure not to look shitty thanks to this miracle. I wish I could share pics from those nights to prove it!
Dior Lip Maximizer. Though some people swear by this product, I wouldn’t say it does it’s job of maximizing my lips. Then again, I may be a hopeless cause and there isn’t that much to work with. Bring on the fillers! I initially feel a tingle after applying this product, but my lips just sit there unchanged, getting thinner and thinner as they day goes on. I bet it’s just an allergen exerting it’s effect and since I am not atopic, it’s very anti-climactic for me. It works great as a moisturizer/ gloss though and it’s colorless if you like to avoid that. Sometimes, I put this on either my top or bottom lip, and put my choice lipstick (see Royal Azalea) on the other lip, smear, and voila, best of both worlds. Even though, I’m not sure this is effective, I still will buy this over and over again.
Field Notes. This little idea came out of Oak Park, IL. Go Oak Park. You can buy this in packs of 3 for $9.95 and you can choose from graph, rules, plain, or mixed sheets. I highly recommend you go their website and check out what they have to offer. As a huge multi-tasker, you can take notes while showering with some of their waterproof options!
Neutrogena Liquid Sunscreen. I first got this product for free at a conference and have loved it since. It is easy to apply, moisturizes your face but goes on matte. It absorbs quickly without that zinc-white residue and you can apply your makeup immediately. Cannot go back.
Aveeno Eczema Therapy Cream. Dermatologist recommended for the compulsive hand washers.
After visit summary: I need a “dot phrase” for things you put in your bag to hand out to everybody. When it comes to bags, “go big or go home”… more frequently. Big bags allow you to stay out of the house for the whole day and errrr night. I am ready for any sleepover if I have all of the above.
